HOW TO PROTECT THE SKIN FROM SOLAR RADIATION?

Kako zaštiti kožu od  sunčevog zračenja?

Moderate sun exposure is good for our health, but excessive exposure to the sun's rays can cause skin damage.

There are three main types of UV rays: UVA, UVB, and UVC. UVC rays are absorbed in the ozone layer and do not reach the Earth's surface, while UVA and UVB rays pass through the atmosphere and are the main culprits of the harmful effects of the sun's rays on our skin. These UV rays cause genetic mutations and can lead to skin cancer.

The SPF factor on skin products is a factor of protection against harmful UVB radiation.

Sunscreens are available in four different levels of protection: low (factors 6 to 10), medium (15 to 25), high (30 to 50) and very high (50+). The higher the protection factor, the better your skin is protected.

A higher SPF doesn't mean we can stay in the sun longer!

People of all skin types should use these products, especially those whose skin is pale and sensitive. Sun protection during sunny periods is necessary, but also when it is cloudy because a high index of harmful UV radiation is present.

Sun-protective products are usually creams, lotions, sticks, and sprays.

Apply them to the skin at least 20 minutes before sun exposure. Also, all sunscreens, regardless of SPF, must be reapplied at least every 2 hours, especially after swimming and if you sweat too much.

Baby's skin is more sensitive and thinner than adults and needs special care and protection.

Babies younger than 12 months should not be exposed to direct sunlight.

If the child is older than 12 months, they can stay in the sun, but with protective equipment such as a hat, T-shirt and sunscreen with a high protection factor.

The choice of sunscreen depends on the intensity of the sun and the amount of time we spend in the sun, as well as the characteristics of the skin. However, sensitive and fair skin needs higher SPF products.

Products with a lighter texture are suitable for acne-prone skin, but skin prone to atopic dermatitis should be treated with products for sensitive skin with an appropriate SPF factor.
